THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for October 17, 1992)
Perhaps the nation that has benefitted most (possibly even
more than the US) from the mass exodus of strong players from
the former Soviet Union, is Israel. Hardly a threat to the
world's chess hierarchy in the past, this year's Israeli
Olympiad team was ranked 14th at the start (with an average
rating of 2542) and finished 11th--ahead of such powerhouses
as Hungary, the Netherlands, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Germany.
Such a dramatic turnaround isn't particularly difficult to
understand, however, considering that the entire Israeli team
consisted of Russian emigres!
With so much talent already in the country, the next logical
step was the organization of a tournament with some strong
foreign competition. Such an event was held several months
ago in the southern Israel town of Beer-Sheva. Utilizing the
rather unusual Scheveningen format, the six players were
divided into two teams, with four game matches played against
each opposing team member. Thus, a "home" team of three top
Israeli players was pitted against three visitors--super GMs
Vladimir Akopian, Alexander Chernin and Viktor Korchnoi.
As expected, the locals, GM Alon Greenfeld and IMs Boris
Alterman and Mark Tsetlin, finished in the bottom of the
standings while the foreign GMs took the top places.
(Korchnoi and Greenfeld tied with 6-6 records.) Akopian ended
with an undefeated 7.5/12, one-half point better than
Chernin.
In this week's game from Beer-Sheva, Korchnoi demonstrates
some of the old tactical flair that nearly earned him the
World Championship in the 1970s.
